About SwimFin Australia

SwimFin Australia exists to help children build confidence, independence, and joy in the water through better design and smarter learn-to-swim tools.

We believe learning to swim should feel empowering - not restrictive - and that confidence grows fastest when children are free to move, explore, and play.

SwimFin is at the centre of that belief.

How I discovered SwimFin

I first came across SwimFin at a second-hand market in Norway while living there. I bought it for my three-year-old simply because I thought it looked cool.

What happened next surprised me.

The first time he put it on in the pool, he swam non-stop for hours. He explored on his own terms, moved freely, rested when he needed to, then went straight back to swimming. The independence it gave him was remarkable.

As a scuba diver and freediver, I’m deeply aware of how confidence and freedom in the water can change everything. Seeing that same confidence emerge so naturally in my child was the moment I realised SwimFin was something different.

Why SwimFin stood out

What impressed me most was how natural everything felt.

Unlike traditional buoyancy aids, SwimFin allowed complete freedom of the arms. My child could swim properly, move naturally, and still take a break when needed without being restricted or held in an artificial position.

As a learn-to-swim teacher, that matters. Freedom of movement isn’t just more enjoyable, it’s fundamental to learning real swimming skills.

Why bring SwimFin back to Australia?

It wasn’t until I went to buy a SwimFin for a family friend that I realised it wasn’t available in Australia anymore.

Digging deeper, I discovered SwimFin had previously been here but disappeared during COVID. Until that moment, I hadn’t realised how much of a gap it left.

As a swim teacher, I regularly see the challenges faced in early learn-to-swim environments, including the widespread use of buoyancy aids like pool noodles placed under the arms. While well-intentioned, these can restrict movement, slip out of place, and interfere with natural swimming.

SwimFin solves that problem cleanly without clutter, restriction, or constant adjustment.

Experience shaped by teaching and sport

I’m currently a learn-to-swim teacher on the Gold Coast, a registered high school Physical Education teacher in Queensland, and have spent more than 15 years coaching and working in sport.

I’ve been around pools, classrooms, and sporting environments for as long as I can remember, working with children, families, and instructors across a wide range of abilities.

That background shapes how SwimFin Australia operates: practical, education-focused, and grounded in what actually works on the pool deck.

Why this matters now

Swimming capability among school-aged children has been declining for several years.

At the same time, many kids are experiencing burnout from screen-based entertainment and instant digital rewards. As both a teacher and a parent, I believe we need better ways to re-engage children in physical activity, especially in environments as important as the water.

SwimFin excites kids. It gives them ownership over their movement. And when children are having fun, learning follows naturally.

Our commitment to Australian families and instructors

SwimFin Australia is here to:

  • Give children a sense of independence and confidence in the pool
  • Help parents support their own children safely, including at home
  • Reduce unnecessary pressure and cost by accelerating progress where appropriate
  • Work with swim schools to introduce a genuinely effective teaching tool
  • Support instructors through education and continuing professional development

Our goal isn’t to replace swim lessons - it’s to make them better, more enjoyable, and more effective.

SwimFin changed how my child experienced the water.

Bringing it back to Australia is about giving more families the opportunity to experience that same confidence, freedom, and joy supported by thoughtful design and real-world teaching experience.
