How SwimFin Works

SwimFin is designed around simple principles of buoyancy, balance, and natural movement.

This page explains how its unique design supports swimmers as they build confidence, technique, and independence in the water.

You don’t need to understand the science to benefit from it but it’s there, working quietly in the background.

Positioned where it works best

SwimFin is worn high on the back, above the swimmer’s centre of gravity.

This position gently supports the body in the water without forcing it forward or upright, keeping the chin on the water level.

Unlike armbands or vests, which lift from the arms or chest, SwimFin helps the swimmer find a natural, balanced position.

Arms remain completely free allowing proper movement from the very beginning.

Vertical = more support

When a swimmer is more upright, SwimFin is deeper in the water.

The greater the submersion, the more buoyancy it provides, offering reassurance and support to beginners.

Horizontal = more independence

As the swimmer becomes more horizontal, the fin naturally rises out of the water.

Less of the fin is submerged, so less buoyancy is provided which encourages balance, body position, and independence.

No adjustments. No inflation. No removing layers.

Beginner

A beginner’s body is lower in the water and the SwimFin is more submerged, offering more uplift and support. The arms are left free for propulsion through the water.

Intermediate

As confidence and ability grow, the body position will improve, SwimFin will raise out of the water as less support is required.

Advanced

In a total horizontal position, SwimFin is almost completely out of the water offering very little or no support at all and because it is streamlined, it will not impede movement through the water.

Why this matters for learning

Traditional swimming aids provide constant upward lift. This means the swimmer is always leaning on the aid for support, which can slow the development of balance and natural buoyancy.

SwimFin works differently. Its support reduces automatically as the swimmer improves, allowing the body to respond naturally to movement and position.

This aligns with basic principles of physics: as the swimmer changes orientation in the water, the forces acting on them change too. The result is a smoother, more intuitive learning process.

(You don’t need to know Newton’s laws — SwimFin already does.)

Free arms mean real swimming

Because SwimFin doesn’t attach to the arms or chest, swimmers are free to move naturally.

This allows:

  • Proper arm recovery
  • Correct catch and pull
  • Balanced rotation
  • Early exposure to real swimming technique

That’s why SwimFin can be used across freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, from beginner lessons through to advanced technique refinement.

No adjustments needed

Support changes automatically as the swimmer improves.

No inflation or deflation

Nothing to add, remove, or modify while swimming.

Confidence builds naturally

Progress happens through movement, not reliance.

Designed for a wide range of swimmers

SwimFin is suitable for swimmers from around 18-24 months through to adults. Its adaptive design allows it to support different body sizes, abilities, and learning speeds.

Many instructors also use SwimFin as a valuable tool for swimmers with additional needs, where confidence, balance, and freedom of movement are especially important.

Built with safety in mind

SwimFin has been designed, tested, and manufactured to meet both international and Australian/New Zealand safety standards.

Its position on the back keeps the face clear of the water, while its secure straps ensure it stays correctly positioned during use.

SwimFin is trusted by families, swim schools, and instructors worldwide.
